Who's on First?
When it comes to dinner salads, do you like your salad as a first course, or do you prefer your salad after the main course? Or perhaps even served with the main course?
Lots of options there ....
For me, if the main course is heavy, then I think a salad after the main, to refresh the palate, is a better experience.
Of course Europeans also have a tendency to bring the salad AFTER the main, while Americans generally have mostly eaten the salad course BEFORE the main course.
And then some people eat the salad and the main, together …
Well finally all of this salad quandary caught up with me today! And so I went to the internet to see what is what with the salad course. I needed an answer! I wanted clarity, I wanted closure. There must be some updates to the salad course in 2024 I figured.
Fine tuning my online search I decided that what I was looking for was an answer to the question, when is it healthiest to have the salad course in a multi course meal.
And the winner is! . . . well, there wasn't one.
BUT here are three things that I DID learn, that I did not know prior to my research.
#1 To control glucose it helps to eat a salad with vinegar at the start of a meal. The acid in the vinegar helps to squash a glucose spike.
#2 In the Ayurvedic tradition, raw and warm cooked food are not compatible, so if you must eat a salad, eat it 20 mins before your main course.
#3 To aid digestion, a salad after the main course is recommended.
There you have it, basically eat your salad when YOU feel like it!
Cheers
